Steps for safely climbing up and down a tree stand

Before Climbing

Inspect and secure the stand

Ensure that your stand and all steps or ladder sections are tightly secured to a solid tree using good straps. Check for any obstructions that might interfere with your climb or entry into the stand.

Prepare safety equipment

Check your lifeline and Prusik knot. The lifeline should run from the ground to above your stand height. Also, ensure your haul line is in place and ready to use. Make sure all arrows are securely stored in a protected bow quiver.

Secure your gear

Properly attach your bow to the haul line, ensuring it is free from any obstructions that could snag during the ascent. If you have additional gear like a fanny pack, backpack, or separate quiver, consider using a second haul line to bring these up separately.

Wear your safety harness

Put on a properly adjusted full-body harness. Ensure all straps are correctly fastened and that your fall arrest system is well attached to your full-body harness. Secure yourself to the Prusik knot.

Ascending the tree

Begin climbing

Start your ascent using the three points of contact rule. This means always having either two feet and one hand, or two hands and one foot in contact with the climbing system at all times. This technique provides stability and reduces the risk of falls.

Use your safety line

As you climb, keep your safety harness attached to the lifeline using the Prusik knot. This ensures you are protected from falls throughout the entire climbing process.

Climb above the stand

Continue climbing until you are slightly above the level of your stand platform. This positioning will allow you to step down onto the platform safely, rather than trying to step up onto it.

Entering the stand

Step onto the platform

Carefully step down onto the platform. Maintain your connection to the lifeline throughout this transition.

Secure yourself to the tree

Once on the platform, immediately secure your harness to the tree using the tree strap. Adjust the strap so it is taut, allowing for minimal slack whether you are standing or sitting. The attachment point should be at or above head level.

Double-check your safety system

Ensure the clamp from your Prusik knot is securely attached to your tree strap.

Final steps

Haul up your equipment

haul-line

Only after you are securely fastened to the tree should you carefully pull up your gear using the haul line(s).

Organize your stand

Once all your gear is up, organize your stand space. Ensure your bow and other equipment are placed securely where they will not fall or create tripping hazards.

Prepare for your hunt

With everything in place and your safety system double-checked, you can now prepare for your hunt.

Remember, safety should always be your top priority. Never rush the process of ascending to your tree/elevated stand. Take your time, follow each step carefully, and always stay connected to your lifeline. Additionally, always inform someone of your hunting location and expected return time as an extra safety precaution.

Descending procedure

Reverse the order of steps when it is time to come down. Maintain the same level of caution and safety awareness when descending.
