Which is the rule for using a full body harness fall arrest system?

Full-Body Harness / Fall Arrest System (FBH/FAS) are safety equipment that significantly reduce the risk of serious injury for hunters using tree stands. Current research of reported incidents involving tree/elevated stands indicates that an overwhelming majority of the victims were NOT using a FBH/FAS. For your safety, you should hunt from the ground if you do not have one.

These systems prevent users from falling to the ground by incorporating a shock-absorbing feature in the tether, which minimizes the impact force of a fall. Additionally, they include suspension relief to avoid suspension trauma, a potentially life-threatening condition that can occur when hanging motionless in a harness for an extended period.

It is imperative to always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions before using an FBH/FAS and to never use outdated single strap waist belts or chest harnesses, which research has shown to be dangerous.

Hunters should familiarize themselves with the proper use and adjustment of their FBH/FAS, carefully inspecting it before each use and checking the expiration date on the label.

When using the system, it is important to adjust the tether length so there is no slack when sitting and to fasten it to the tree at or above head level. This minimizes injury risk and allows for faster recovery in case of a fall. Importantly, never allow the tether strap to get under your chin or around your neck, as this could lead to serious injury or strangulation.

A lifeline is a rope system that runs from the ground to above the tree stand, allowing hunters to remain securely attached to the tree while climbing up, hunting, and descending. Lifelines prevent falls by reducing the risk of injury when using tree stands.

Haul line

A haul line is a rope or cord used by hunters to safely raise and lower equipment to and from elevated hunting positions. It allows hunters to climb with free hands, reducing fall risk. Hunters attach gear like bows to the haul line, climb up, then pull up their equipment once safely secured in the stand.

Suspension release straps

Suspension release straps are safety devices designed to prevent suspension trauma when using a full-body harness (FBH) or fall arrest system (FAS). If a fall occurs and you are left hanging in your harness, blood can pool in your legs, potentially leading to unconsciousness or death within minutes. Suspension release straps allow you to stand up in your harness, relieving pressure on your legs and improving circulation. These straps typically deploy from pouches on the harness, creating foot loops that you can step into and push against, simulating a standing position while suspended.
