Trail Carry - Hunting Position
What is the trail carry position?
The trail carry position is one of the common and practical firearm-carrying methods used when hunting. In this position, the muzzle point forward and slightly downward, away from your body and others. The hand on that side supports the firearm just behind the trigger guard or around the balance point, allowing for relaxed control and quick readiness if game appears. It’s a comfortable option during long walks because it reduces arm fatigue and keeps the firearm readily accessible.
However, the trail carry must always be used with strict attention to muzzle direction and surroundings. It should never be used when walking in a group or when another person is ahead of you, since the muzzle could accidentally point toward them. The position is best suited for solo travel or when others are safely behind and to the side. Hunters must stay alert to avoid tripping hazards such as roots, rocks, or uneven terrain, which could cause the firearm to swing dangerously.
Safety is the main rule in all carrying positions. The trail carry is efficient, but it requires awareness and discipline to maintain muzzle control. When used properly, it allows hunters to rest their arms, move quietly, and remain ready for quick, safe action. It’s ideal for calm, open terrain where visibility is good and no one is walking in front.
What is the trail carry good for?
If a hunting party is traveling in single file, only the lead person should use the trail carry. This one-handed carry provides the least control in the event of a fall or other problems.
Don’t use when debris can get in barrel.
Never use this carry if someone is walking ahead of you.
