Drying animal hides for preservation and use
Drying
Temperature and humidity are important factors in the drying process, as maintaining optimal conditions helps ensure thorough drying while minimizing the risk of mold growth and deterioration.
A range of 50°F to 60°F is often recommended. This moderate temperature helps facilitate drying without causing damage to the fur or leather. Low humidity levels, ideally between 40% and 50%, are preferred. High humidity can slow down the drying process and increase the risk of mold growth on the pelts.
Typically, pelts are dried with the fur side facing inward for several reasons. First, this method protects the fur from possible damage during the drying process. When the fur side is inward, it is shielded from direct exposure to heat and environmental elements that could cause matting or fading of the fur. Additionally, drying pelts in this manner allows for better air circulation around the skin, facilitating even drying and reducing the risk of mold or spoilage.
Once the skin is adequately dried to the touch (until the flesh has a glazed appearance and is no longer sticky but still somewhat soft and flexible) trappers can then turn the pelts' fur side out for final drying. Time required varies with temperature and humidity but generally takes about 4 to 6 hours at room temperature before turning the pelts.
Trappers often utilize specialized equipment for drying, such as drying racks or controlled temperature drying rooms, which help maintain consistent conditions. These setups ensure that pelts dry evenly and efficiently, preserving their quality for future use.
Beaver drying technique
Beaver pelts require a slightly different drying approach compared to other types of pelts. They are typically stretched on round hoops during the drying process. Beaver pelts must be dry in a cool, dry location, away from direct sunlight and heat sources, as this helps prevent damage to both the fur and leather. Maintaining the proper conditions during drying is important for preserving the quality and condition of the pelts.
