Water sets using a foothold trap
Trail set
A trail set using foothold traps in water is effective for trapping semi-aquatic furbearers like muskrats and minks.
The set is placed along underwater paths where animals frequently travel, often near shorelines or entry/exit points. The foothold trap is positioned in shallow water, typically 2-4 inches deep, and firmly bedded on the bottom to prevent shifting:
- Place it at proper water depth for the target species.
- Secure anchoring using stakes or drowning wires.
- Cover it with mud or aquatic vegetation if necessary.
For muskrats, a trail set is particularly effective. The trap is placed where the muskrat's slide enters the water, in line with the slide path. The trap should be wired to a stake in deep water to ensure quick submersion of the captured animal.
Pocket set
A pocket set is a method for trapping semi-aquatic furbearers like minks and raccoons.
The set involves digging a small pocket into a steep bank, starting slightly below water level. The pocket should be about 6 inches in diameter, sloping upward with the back 3-4 inches above water level. A foothold trap is placed at the pocket's entrance, typically 2 inches underwater:
- Bait (fish, crayfish, or muskrat) is placed at the back of the pocket.
- Mink lure can be added on a twig or grass.
- The trap should be slightly hidden with water-soaked leaves or mud.
- Stake the trap so the captured animal can reach deep water.
- For dog safety, place the trap deeper in the pocket and use natural covers.
This set takes advantage of the animal's curiosity to investigate the scented pocket.
